Bergen County NJ SKYWARN Spotter Training Classes For 2005

A Basic Level SKYWARN Spotter Training Class was held at  The Bergen County Law and Public Safety Institute in the Hall Of Heroes Auditorium, located in Mahwah, Bergen County NJ on April 13th 2005. We are pleased to report that there were over 27 Spotters and Guests in attendance and that new for 2005 Spotters numbered 15.

The local NJ SKYWARN Coordinators wish to thank all those who attended, as well as Scott Reynolds, Senior Forecaster and SKYWARN Program Leader, NWS Upton, NY who conducted the Class, The 10-70 Repeater Association and the Ramsey NJ Office Of Emergency Management who co-hosted the Class.

SKYWARN Spotter Training Classes are not limited just to residents of the Counties where they are held . All NWS SKYWARN Spotter Training Classes (see Note below regarding a pre-requisite regarding Advanced SKYWARN Spotter Training Classes) are open to all who wish to attend.

Note: to attend an Advanced SKYWARN Spotter Class you must be an up-to-date Trained Spotter...i.e. you have attended a SKYWARN Spotter Training Class within the last 3 years.

A Basic Level SKYWARN Spotter Training Class was held in conjunction with the Monthly Meeting of the North Jersey Weather Observers at the Bergen Community Service Building, located in Paramus, Bergen County NJ on April 27th 2005. We are pleased to report that there were over 17 Spotters and Guests in attendance and that new for 2005 Spotters numbered 8.

SKYWARN Spotter Training Classes are not limited just to residents of the Counties where they are held . All NWS SKYWARN Spotter Training Classes (see Note below regarding a pre-requisite regarding Advanced SKYWARN Spotter Training Classes) are open to all who wish to attend.

Note: to attend an Advanced SKYWARN Spotter Class you must be an up-to-date Trained Spotter...i.e. you have attended a SKYWARN Spotter Training Class within the last 3 years.

An Advanced Level SKYWARN Spotter Training Class was held at  The Bergen County Law and Public Safety Institute in the Hall Of Heroes Auditorium, located in Mahwah, Bergen County NJ on Wednesday, May 11th 2005. We are pleased to report that there were over 37 Spotters and Guests in attendance from more than 30 different municipalities of both NJ and NY.

The local NJ SKYWARN Coordinators wish to thank all those who attended, as well as Scott Reynolds, Senior Forecaster and SKYWARN Program Leader, NWS Upton, NY who conducted the Class, The 10-70 Repeater Association and the Ramsey NJ Office Of Emergency Management who co-hosted the Class.

The 3 hour class and its accompanying multi-media presentation covered all types of severe weather, highlighting what Spotters should be on the look for in their observations and reports as well as the proper precautions necessary for safe Spotting. Several in-depth scenarios were covered including video of an actual tornado incident in Ohio which emphasized the importance of advance planning, safe shelters and the use of NOAA All Hazards Radio.
